Abstract
Background: Solid and papillary neoplasm(SPEN) of the pancreas is usually occurred in young women. It is controversal that age is related to the malignancy of the rumors. Although there we reports that ¡¯Older patients, Higher malignancy¡¯, some authors reported that age was not related to th malignancy of the rumors. However, these studies were limited because of its rarity.

Methods: We experienced 12 cases of SPEN in Samsung Medical Center from the Oct. 1994 to the May 1999 and analyzed the relationship between malignant potential and age (by Nishihara¡¯s pathologic scoring system: Nuclea grade, venous invasion and necrobiotic nests).

Results: The range of the patients¡¯ age was 16-66 years old (Mean age: 39 years old). We defined that the patients above 30 years as old age (9 cases). The ratio of female to male was 10 to 2. Most commonsymptom or sign was as follows: abdominal pain, asymptom, abdominal mass and hyperglycemia. Mean tumor size was 7§¯ and most common site was pancreatic tail (6 cases) followed by body (4 cases) and head (2 cases). Calcifications of the tumors were found in 6 cases (50£¥). All tumors were resected curatively and there was no recurrence. According to malignant potential assessed by pathologic scoring system, mean score was 2.4 points (full score: 6 points), and young patients¡¯ mean score(2.4 points) was higher than old patients¡¯ (2.2 points). There was no relationship between age and malignant potential.

Conclusion: We found that SPEN mostly occurred in women and could be achieved in good prognosis with complete resection. Old age may not be related to higher malignant potential.
